Middle East in Crisis
The Middle East has been the world troublespot since 1948, when an uneasy peace followed the Arab- Israeli war. Israel fought three more wars against its Arab neighbours, and the Palestinians remained without the homeland of their own. Terrorism became a terrible weapon in this conflict, which was bound up with two other issues: the World thirst for oil, much of which comes from the Middle States, and the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism.Israel's population increased during 1950s as Jews emigrated from Europe, russia and the U.S. The Palestine Arabs, pushed into separate communities within Israel, began the campaign for their own state. War were fought in 1956, 1967 and 1973. The first war began after Egypt took control of Suez Canal. British and France invaded Egypt, but later withdrew. Israel won control of Jerusalem and the West Bank of the Jordan river. It fought off Egyptian and Syrian attacks in the Yom Kippur war in 1973.
Israel also became involved in the civil war in Lebanon, where many Palestinians live in refugee camps. By 1990s, Israel had signed peace agreement with Egypt, Jordan and Syria, and the Palestinians had attained limited self-government. Yet terrorist attacks by extremist group opposed the new Israeli settlements, and even Israel's very existence, continued.
The US has tried to mediate in the Middle East, though
many Arabs see America as Israel's ally. In 1993, President Bill
Clinton (centre) welcome the deal between Israeli Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin (left) and Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestinians,
to established Palestinian self-rule. Rabin was assassinated in 1995.

In 1979, the Shah of Iran was overthrown and an Islamic regime took over. Iran went to the war with Iraq in 1980. Neither side won costly conflict. In 1990, Iraq invaded its tiny neighbour Kuwait, but was defeated in the brief Gulf War by the UN coalition force led by the US. Iraqi's ruler Saddam Hussein was finally deposed in 2003, when US-led forces invaded Iraq.
Ayatollah Khomeini (1900-1989)
was a revolutionary religious leader
of Iran. He came to power in 1979
after the Shah of Iran was overthrown.
Under Khomeini, Iran became a strict Muslim
Saddam Hussein.
Ruled oil-rich Iraq from 1979-2003.
A brutal dictator, he was tried by the
Iraq Special Tribunal in 2006 and
sentenced to death by hanging. He was
executed on 30 December, 2006.
